Two Delicious Caramel-Apple Recipes for Fall

Fall is officially here. What better way to celebrate the season than with some crunchy, sticky caramel apples? You can make caramel apples at home with just a few ingredients. Here are two different recipes to try: one that makes classic caramel apples and another that results in more unique, rocky road–style caramel apples.

Classic Caramel Apples

Ingredients:

  • 4 tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Cortland
  • 30 soft caramel candies, unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with waxed paper. Spray the waxed paper with non-stick cooking spray. Rinse each of the apples and then pat them dry with a soft towel. Insert a popsicle stick into the stem end of each apple. Make sure you push it down far enough to ensure it's stable.

In a saucepan, combine the caramel candies and the milk. Turn the burner to low and heat the candies as you stir constantly. Once all of the caramels are completely melted and the milk is incorporated, remove the caramel from the heat. Hold one apple over the pan and spoon caramel over it until it's completely coated. Then place the apple on the wax paper–lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining apples, working quickly to finish before the caramel hardens.

Place the apples in the refrigerator and let the caramel harden for about an hour before you eat them.

Rocky-Road Caramel Apples

Ingredients:

  • 4 tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Cortland
  • 30 soft caramel candies, unwrapped
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/4 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Wash the apples and pat them dry. Insert a popsicle stick into each one. Prepare a baking sheet with wax paper and non-stick cooking spray. On a separate baking sheet, spread out the marshmallows, chocolate chips, and walnuts. Mix them together so that they're evenly interspersed across the baking sheet.

In a saucepan, combine the caramel candies and the milk. Heat over low heat while stirring constantly until the caramels are completely melted. Spoon the caramels over the apples, one at a time, placing the coated apples on the wax paper-lined baking sheet. Once the apples are coated, let them sit for 10 minutes so the caramel partially hardens. Then, roll them in the marshmallow, chocolate chip, and walnut mixture one at a time. When you're finished rolling an apple, place it back on the lined baking sheet. Place the finished apples in the fridge for one hour before eating.
